The Lighted Cross above Lake San Marcos
The Lighted Cross on the Hill above Lake San Marcos turns into a “star” in December. The two crossbars are rotated to show a smaller cross behind the larger one thus becoming a “star”. The Lake San Marcos Cross began as a Cable and Communications tower in 1963 for the growing community below it. Christmas lights were strung at Christmas time and were so well received that it soon became a tradition and eventually lights stayed lit all year. The tower has changed hands several times and in 2006 was transferred to the Lake San Marcos Community Association to manage. John Steever, a local contractor, has volunteered to maintain the cross, replacing wiring and light bulbs as they need it.
