Took a day trip out to Borrego Springs in the Anza Borrego Desert to see the gigantic menagerie of prehistoric animals that rise out of the desert floor. Located on a huge privately owned estate called Galleta Meadows on the outskirts of Borrego Springs, these GIANT extinct Sabertoothed Tigers, Woolly Mammoths, Desert Tortoises, Wild Horses, Camels, Sloths, and Elephants magically appear as you are driving down the road. Dirt roads lead cars right to the statues where you can wander around looking closely at the metal sculptures. It is magical and a surreal surprise to your visit. Join me on my video tour of the statues.
Took a day trip on Sunday out to one of my favorite places to go during March- the Anza Borrego Desert- to see what the winter rains have produced in the wild flower displays. I was disappointed in the late bloom and sparce displays. Where on past years, Sand Verbena have covered the desert floor with a lavender blanket, this year they were just here and there. There were a lot of people as the Anza Borrego Garden show was also underway, but the flowers were fewer than years past at this time of year. The trip up through Ramona and Julian then down into the desert is about 2 hours and you can easily spend 3-4 hours sightseeing with your camera, it is a great day trip although spending the night in the desert and waking up to the fresh desert air is a treat in itself as well. If trudging through the desert flowers, be sure to wear long pants, tennis shoes and socks as the cactus will jump out and spear your feet and legs without warning, leaving a painful poison prick. I took this video, identifying some of my favorite flowers. Also filmed some of the scenery along the way.
